What’s In The Box – June 26, 2009

June 26, 2009

Hi all,

Welcome to the first official week of summer, hope everyone’s enjoying it so far. Also the first peppers of the season – time for salsa!! You could make a really nice version with tomatoes, onion, peppers, garlic, sungolds, grated beet and a little bit of basil, + lime juice and salt to taste. Feel free to pass along any other salsa ideas – we love to hear ’em.

In your box this week:

-Red, White & Blue Potatoes (we’ll do another dose of these next week too)

-Tomatoes

-Frenchie Green Beans

-Micro-Mix Salad Spiker (baby chard, amaranth & summer spinach)

-Cooking Greens

-Sun Golds – a sweet cherry tomato and a favorite last year

-Fresh Onion: “Red Long of Tropea”

-Salsa Peppers: jalapeno and banana

-Garlic

-Basil

-Beets

Bonus veggie: Soybeans. these were originally meant to be edamame (young soybeans that are ususally eaten raw or lightly steamed), but we missed the very short harvest window. Fret not though, we have another batch coming and are watching like hawks. You can still use these for cooking like you would a dry bean – great in a bean salad or asian slaw.

Vacations & Session 2: We know many of you will be going on vacation over the summer. One way to handle this is to give a friend a “guest membership” while you’re gone, but we’ll happily take suggestions if you have other ideas. One floating around was exchanging that week’s box for the equivalent amount of preservable veggies – i.e., 10# potatoes, tomatoes, etc., to be picked up at your convenience. Just let us know when/if you’ll be gone and we can make arrangements. Also, Session 2 is now officially started!! If you’re not sure whether you have paid yet, just check with Farrell – he has the master list.

Have a great weekend everyone,

Em & Farrell

p.s. please please please remember to bring back your boxes!! We use them for our display at the Saturday Farmer’s Market, and we’re getting kinda low… If you have extras, just bring them back as soon as you can – we promise we won’t judge.
