What’s In The Box – August 7, 2009

August 7, 2009

Hey Everybody~

Hope you’ve enjoyed the rain and (and sun). In between showers Farrell has somehow managed to till the equivalent of two gardens (not sure how many miles that is) in prep for fall stuff, we started broccoli, cabbage, brussels sprouts and just got our fall salad greens seeds in the mail today. So if you have seen salads in the crystal ball your visions will soon come true. In fact, really soon – we actually have lettuce this week, so you’ll be able (briefly) to have fresh tomato in your equally fresh salad (don’t worry there’s a real recipe too).

In the box this week:

– Blueberries

– Sungolds

– Slicing Tomatoes

– Haricot Verts/”Frenchies”

– Cilantro

– Lettuce

– Callaloo

– Tomatillos

– Baby Carrots

– Garlic

– Rose Finn Apple Potatoes

– Zinnias

– Mint

– Bell Peppers

Whew! OK recipe for this week, courtesy of our kitchen. Very simple, very good:

Kind-of-stewed Haricot Verts

  • 1 pound green beans/Haricot Verts, stems removed
  • 3 medium tomatoes (or weight equivalent in smaller ones) sliced into small wedges
  • 1 medium onion
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 2 Tbsp. olive oil
  • salt & pepper to taste

Sautee onions in olive oil for 3-5 minutes or so, then add green beans and go for another 3 min. or until they turn bright green. Add tomatoes and cook, stirring until enough of the juice cooks off to make a thin tomato sauce. Then add garlic, salt & pepper just before you turn the heat off. Yum….

Enjoy the veggies & we’ll see you this weekend,
