What’s in the Box, 5/28/10

May 28, 2010

Hello All,

We just found out that it’s the Full Flower Moon. We guessed at the meaning of this and, after consulting the internet determined that we were right: “because flowers are abundant everywhere.” It is true, even in places you maybe don’t want flowers, like some of our green onions. Fear not though, the bulb onions are soon on the way and the Allium (Onion) family still manages to makes a prominent appearance in this week’s box (in which you will find….):

Hakurei Turnips
Summer Squash
Salad Mix
Chard
New Potatoes
Softneck Garlic (“The Allium”)
Frisee
Beets
Parlsey
Lemon Balm (try in sorbet, tea, lemonade, etc.)
Cabbage

Recipe of the week:

FRISEE SALAD WITH ROASTED SHALLOT AND BACON VINAIGRETTE

This looks amazing. We recently me Fred Thompson of Edible Piedmont and he assured us that yes, the dish was as delicious as the picture promises. You can substitute the garlic for the shallot. But you can’t substitute anything else for a real, pastured farm fresh egg. Bon appetite!

We hope you’re enjoying the season so far and can’t wait to see you soon–

Em & Farrell,
Dutch Buffalo Farm

p.s. if you want to know where we were last Sunday check out our pictures from the Farm to Fork Picnic on Facebook.
